Regulation 14 For Glass
When creating a comfortable and productive workplace for your employees and colleagues, there are so many aspects to consider that oftentimes adhering to safety regulations can fall by the wayside. However, this is a key step in updating or replacing existing elements of your windows, as failure to adhere to regulations can result in heavy fines that could have been easily avoided. At ADS Window Films, our business is to know and understand the existing regulations regarding windows so that we can better help our clients understand how Regulation 14 affects you, and if any additional action is required on your part to remain compliant with the existing safety ordinances.
What is Regulation 14 for glass?
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 has helped provide regulations and guidance for those who have some measure of control over workplaces in order to keep locations safe for everyone present. Under this act is Regulation 14, which guides decision-making regarding glass and window glazing in public spaces and workplaces. It says:
“Every window or other transparent or translucent surface in a wall or partition and every transparent or translucent surface in a door or gate shall, where necessary for reasons of health and safety:
- Be of safety material or be protected against breakage of the transparent or translucent material;
- Be appropriately marked or incorporate features so as, in either case, to make it apparent.”
Essentially, this means that for every workplace an audit needs to be performed of the existing windows and transparent partitions to ensure that they will not be easily broken by any activities which may occur in their vicinity, as well as be appropriately marked for the safety of individuals coming into contact with these areas. And, while discerning which windows are compliant with the regulation and which need updating might seem like a daunting task, the expert team at ADS Window Films are here to provide guidance at every step of the way.
What does this mean for me?
In any area where glass breakage may occur, the risk needs to be assessed according to certain conditions. For example: the risk of impact according to the location of the glazing, what activities are being carried out in the vicinity of the glass, how much traffic is nearby the glass, and if there is a history of breakage at that location, thereby increasing the risk of a future breakage event. Windows in certain locations which are more susceptible to breakage will require an additional level of inspection, as per Regulation 14 for glass.
Fortunately, if your glazing or windows are found to not be compliant with Regulation 14, installing ADS Window Films can oftentimes help to rectify this issue without having to resort to expensive construction or replacements. The installation of safety or decorative window film in high-risk locations can help to increase the glazing safety and visibility in order to bring your existing glazing up to regulations via a much cheaper solution than replacing existing windows.
Our team at ADS Window Films are the experts in our field and are here to guide you through the process of assessing your existing glazing in order to make recommendations for updates. If you are having difficulty interpreting the terms of Regulation 14, or deciding what your best option is moving forward, please do not hesitate to reach out to the ADS Window Films team today. We are here to help guide your decision making and provide alternative courses that allow you to stay compliant to Regulation 14 for glass without undertaking expensive repairs or replacements. One of the benefits of living in today’s modern times is having access to the many wondrous technological advances that can make our lives easier, simpler, or more comfortable. One such advance that offers the potential to totally revolutionise your home or office is switchable film.
As modern architecture grows, one feature that is becoming more and more ubiquitous is large, prominent windows that allow lots of natural light into the space. However, a common problem is the lack of privacy that large windows create, leading some to glaze the windows in more private spaces such as bathrooms, or cover up the windows with heavy curtains in bedrooms and living spaces. This causes home and business owners to have to sacrifice views and natural light for privacy, making the installation of large windows less effective in your modern spaces. But ADS switchable smart window film offers a simple, smart option that allows you to do away with the unsightly blinds and murky glazing and revolutionise your window experience.
What is ADS switchable smart window film?
ADS switchable smart window film is a way to upgrade and modernise your already existing windows, as it can be easily applied and does not require the complicated installation associated with replacing the entire window. Essentially an “electronic blind,” our smart window film allows you to have the gorgeous, un-tinted, unobstructed windows of your dreams that can then be switched via remote or smart device into glazed windows that give you the privacy that you need in your commercial and residential spaces.
No longer do you have to choose between gorgeous natural light and privacy, as ADS switchable smart window film provides an affordable, no-construction option to give you the best of both worlds with the simple touch of a button.
What are the benefits of switchable film?
- Customisable privacy: This product allows you to totally customise the amount of natural light and view into and out of your commercial or residential space. Natural light is an important design feature that makes your space feel welcoming, bright, and cheery, but having unobstructed views into your space—especially when the sun goes down—is not desirable. Switchable film allows you to completely customise the amount of privacy available to you without obstructing the existing windows at all. No longer do you have to settle for unsightly solutions to provide the privacy you need!
- Universal fit: Because it is film, this product has a universal fit that can be applied to any shape or size of window. Some of the most popular locations are bi-fold doors, bathrooms, French windows, and glazed facades. If there are holes, oddly-shaped edges, or rounded corners, switchable film can be easily cut to suit.
- UV protection and glare reduction: Even in its un-glazed setting, switchable window film blocks up to 99.6% of UV glare, acting as a way to protect your furniture from fading and prevent annoying glare on devices.
- Cost-savings: Switchable glass is a common solution when home or business owners need to find a way to provide privacy, especially with windows that aren’t conducive to the installation of blinds or drapes. However, this is expensive, and some windows simply can’t be replaced. Switchable film provides a much more cost-effective and custom solution that can be applied to your existing windows without having to undergo the expensive replacement process.
ADS Window Films are true professionals with over six years of experience in the installation of this modern window film solution, which includes making the wires available for connection by your electrician.
Because of the variety of applications of switchable smart window film, the associated costs can vary widely depending on the scope of the project ad whether you would like installation or just supply. If you think switchable smart window films are the right choice for you or would like to discuss the process and associated costs, contact us today to discuss your options and next steps.
Energy Saving Windows
Unless you have been living under a rock or somewhere off-grid, you are likely aware of the fact that energy costs have been skyrocketing recently, and it seems that there is no clear end in sight. Combining this with the fact that overall costs of living are also inflating means that energy customers in the UK are scrambling to find ways to cut costs and reduce their overall energy expenditures to make living more affordable. On October 1st of this year, energy costs in the UK went up thirty seven percent, causing many businesses to look for new ways to decrease their expenditures and make their properties more energy efficient.
How can adding ADS Window Film to your windows decrease your energy costs?
Most people are aware of small changes that can be made to decrease your energy usage such as turning off lights that are not necessary, unplugging appliances, and switching to more energy efficient bulbs and machines. However, these strategies fail to recognise the larger drain on energy—your windows. An estimated twenty-five percent of energy pounds are lost through windows—even more if you have larger windows—which makes it a seriously underestimated drain on energy, especially for businesses and commercial properties with large buildings.
Many people attempt to decrease this loss by replacing their current windows with so-called energy saving windows. However, this is an expensive, less-effective endeavor to undertake during such trying financial times when there is a cheaper, more efficient option available for both commercial and residential properties. ADS Window Film offers specialised window films that can be applied to your already existing windows to instantly decrease your energy expenditures without costly construction measures.
Our window films help to keep the heat in during the winter, preventing loss through the glass, as well as reflecting outside heat back to keep the interior cooler in the summer months. This means that your heating and air conditioning units will not have to work as hard to keep the interior comfortable no matter the season. Our specialised window films help to filter the UV rays coming in from the outside without obscuring or decreasing the view, decreasing glare and creating a much more comfortable environment for those inside while also reducing costs and energy expenditures. In fact, because the films go to work saving energy instantly, you can start making back your initial investment with fast paybacks that offer significant savings over the course of the product’s lifetime.
Why choose ADS Window Films?
The price of energy these days can be downright frightening, but ADS Window Films has an affordable, feasible solution that can help you stop haemorrhaging money when the electricity bill comes due.
