Putting your pupil’s safety first

Do you have any documents to prove that your glass is safe? Do you know if it meets safety regulations?

Here at ADS Window Films we offer a comprehensive Glazing Survey to comply with Regulation 14 (The Management of Workplace Regulations 1992). The survey will assess how safe your school is and bring you up to date with current compliance.

If you don’t have any evidence or you’re not sure that your glazing is safe, call us today on 01752 252583 for your FREE Consultation as we can help determine the condition of your glazing.

Kids and glass, its an accident waiting to happen.
Should the worst happen i.e. a child falls into a glass pane…
Are you sure that you’ve done everything possible to ensure that the glass is as safe as it could be?

The option of re-glazing all critical locations with laminated or toughened glass is a very expensive, as well as disruptive operation. However the application of a fully tested safety film to the glazing will ensure compliance with the regulations and can protect against accidental impact.

In addition to Safety film we have a comprehensive range of window films offering multiple benefits including:

  • Glare reduction
  • Heat reduction
  • Privacy
  • Heat retention
  • Fade reduction
  • Manifestation
  • Graphics

What is Regulation 14

Regulation 14 requires that every window or other transparent or translucent surface in a wall, partition, door or gate should, where necessary for reasons of health or safety, be of a safety material or be protected against breakage of the transparent or translucent material; and be appropriately marked or incorporate features to make it apparent.
Employers who fail to meet this legal obligation run the risk of costly litigation should an accident occur involving these glazed areas.

In a nutshell this means that glass must be safe from breakage and visible to avoid accidental collision.

We are increasingly living in a blame culture and those who fail to meet the law and their employers can expect to face civil action in the event of an injury, substantial fines and potentially… a jail term.

ADS will help you through every step of meeting the legislation

Assessments made in the past were rarely detailed enough for today’s needs. In many cases, just the work required was documented and typically only Risk Codes 1 and 2 were considered. Risk Codes 3, 4 and 5 are now deemed just as critical.

Diagram A below shows the risk codes in action. Regulation 14 does not specify a type of grading system, so we have adopted the BS6262 standard, which addresses critical areas that are statistically more dangerous.

RISK 1: From floor to 150cm high in any door or opening incorporating glass and 30cm either side of the door or opening if its structure includes glass.
RISK 2: From floor to 80cm high in any structure incorporating glass.
RISK 3: Glazed balustrades.

RISK 4: Glazing in and around wet areas such as swimming pools and showers.
RISK 5: In any other area where the activity or type of person exposed to the glazing make it potentially hazardous.

Diagram B (below) – Glass must be seen before it is felt. We use the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 of Document M of the Building Regulations as the approach to make glass seen.

Regulation 14 overview –

How a Glazing Survey with ADS works:

One of our qualified surveyors will visit your school / college and carry out a thorough risk assessment of all the glazing on site.

After the survey, you will receive a full and unbiased report on the safety of the glass and given a list of recommendations which will bring your premises up to date with Regulation 14.

Upgrade your glass to the standard required at a fraction of the cost of replacement glazing.
