Current legislation stipulates that glazing in all non-domestic premises that is deemed to be in a critical location should be made of a safety material. Typically, this means to approximately waist height (of an average adult) in all windows and shoulder height in or adjacent to doors. Failure to comply may result in prosecution in the event of an accident, as well as the obvious likelihood of serious injury to the general public or your employees.

The option of re-glazing all critical location with laminated or toughened glass is a very expensive, as well as disruptive operation. However, the application of a fully tested safety film to the glazing will ensure compliance with the regulations. There is a comprehensive range of safety and security window film that can protect against accidental impact, as well as violent attack, smash-and-grab break in attempts, explosions and spontaneous breaks.

When accidents or spontaneous breakages occur, shattered glass fragments pose a great risk of personal injury. Our Safety Film helps to hold glass fragments in place until they can safely be removed and replaced. In addition to the loss of merchandise, smash-and-grab theft can cost retailers thousands in damage to windows and furnishings. Safety Film deters forced entry by making windows harder to penetrate, encouraging would-be intruders to seek easier targets. And unlike bars or grates, Safety Film doesn’t block product displays, so you can deter thieves without discouraging customers.

Enhance your safety and security with the application of safety film. Safety Film can protect people and objects from shards of glass if the glass is ever broken. This means that glass, once installed, can later be upgraded to meet legal standards.

For added security ADS also fit bomb blast security film which helps to absorb energy from an explosion and helped prevent injury to personnel, the general public and property. Anti-graffiti protection is available as a low cost easily replaceable sacrificial layer that can be replaced should vandalism occur.

Covering the windows of the world.

ADS Safety Window Film has prevented an attempted smash and grab raid at a high street shop in Chard, Somerset. A concrete boulder was thrown three or four times at the shop front of Barons Menswear in the early hours of the morning in an attempt to smash the glass. Although the glass shattered, the safety film held the pieces intact within the window frame and prevented the “would be” thieves from gaining access to the shop.

The ADS Safety Film has now been installed to neighbouring shops that saw first hand the real benefits of the film.

Shop proprietor John Baron comments: “There is no doubt in my mind that the safety film prevented a burglary. This was no speculative, random attempt. It was the second attempted break in and it was definitely planned. The first attempt was on a window that didn’t have safety film and that unfortunately succeeded.”

ADS Safety Film is a clear polyester film, which is applied to the internal or external face of windows or glazed door panels. In the event of a breakage, it holds together the shards of broken glass to prevent injury, damage and, in this case illegal entry. Safety Film is not burglar proof but it makes penetration much more difficult and slow, deterring the less determined burglar and giving time for the alarm to be raised.

ADS Window Films Ltd has been solving all manner of glass related problems throughout the South-West for many years. Along with the security benefits, window films can reduce unwanted heat, glare and minimise fading of soft furnishing by virtually eliminating Ultra Violet Light.

Kids and glass, its an accident waiting to happen.
Should the worst happen i.e. a child falls into a glass pane…
Are you sure that you’ve done everything possible to ensure that the glass is as safe as it could be?

The option of re-glazing all critical locations with laminated or toughened glass is a very expensive, as well as disruptive operation. However the application of a fully tested safety film to the glazing will ensure compliance with the regulations and can protect against accidental impact.

In addition to Safety film we have a comprehensive range of window films offering multiple benefits including:

  • Glare reduction
  • Heat reduction
  • Privacy
  • Heat retention
  • Fade reduction
  • Manifestation
  • Graphics

What is Regulation 14

Regulation 14 requires that every window or other transparent or translucent surface in a wall, partition, door or gate should, where necessary for reasons of health or safety, be of a safety material or be protected against breakage of the transparent or translucent material; and be appropriately marked or incorporate features to make it apparent.
Employers who fail to meet this legal obligation run the risk of costly litigation should an accident occur involving these glazed areas.

In a nutshell this means that glass must be safe from breakage and visible to avoid accidental collision.

We are increasingly living in a blame culture and those who fail to meet the law and their employers can expect to face civil action in the event of an injury, substantial fines and potentially… a jail term.

ADS will help you through every step of meeting the legislation

Assessments made in the past were rarely detailed enough for today’s needs. In many cases, just the work required was documented and typically only Risk Codes 1 and 2 were considered. Risk Codes 3, 4 and 5 are now deemed just as critical.

Diagram A below shows the risk codes in action. Regulation 14 does not specify a type of grading system, so we have adopted the BS6262 standard, which addresses critical areas that are statistically more dangerous.

RISK 1: From floor to 150cm high in any door or opening incorporating glass and 30cm either side of the door or opening if its structure includes glass.
RISK 2: From floor to 80cm high in any structure incorporating glass.
RISK 3: Glazed balustrades.

RISK 4: Glazing in and around wet areas such as swimming pools and showers.
RISK 5: In any other area where the activity or type of person exposed to the glazing make it potentially hazardous.

Diagram B (below) – Glass must be seen before it is felt. We use the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 of Document M of the Building Regulations as the approach to make glass seen.

Regulation 14 overview –

How a Glazing Survey with ADS works:

One of our qualified surveyors will visit your school / college and carry out a thorough risk assessment of all the glazing on site.

After the survey, you will receive a full and unbiased report on the safety of the glass and given a list of recommendations which will bring your premises up to date with Regulation 14.

Upgrade your glass to the standard required at a fraction of the cost of replacement glazing.
